Housing Development Center is pleased to announce the hire of Gigi Szabo as senior finance project manager. Gigi will work with HDC clients to develop and preserve affordable housing and community facilities, with a focus on assessing feasibility and structuring multisource financing packages. Gigi joined HDC in April, bringing more than 15 years of affordable-housing development and finance experience spanning executive leadership, program management and consulting roles. Gigi’s in-depth knowledge of local, state and federal affordable and supportive housing funding programs includes expertise in the financing of permanent supportive housing for veterans and people with special needs.

Housing Development Center is pleased to announce the hire of Andrea K. Sanchez as director of project finance. Andrea will lead HDC’s work assembling and structuring financing for the development of affordable housing and community facilities serving low-income people. A member of HDC’s management team, Andrea will supervise a staff of five and provide direct services to HDC development clients, working closely with HDC’s construction management and asset management teams to provide property solutions that meet the long-term needs of HDC clients, their partners and the people they serve.

Isabella Court, a new affordable housing community serving low-income seniors in Vancouver, will celebrate its grand opening this month. Housing Development Center managed construction and provided predevelopment financing for the REACH Community Development project, which completed construction in December.

HDC Board of Directors names new executive director.

Today the board of directors of Housing Development Center (HDC) announced the selection of Joni Hartmann as HDC’s new executive director. Joni will begin her tenure as executive director on January 1, succeeding Robin Boyce, who is retiring at the end of December. Joni currently serves as HDC deputy director and as executive director of HDC Community Fund, HDC’s affiliated lending agency.

Representatives of 21 affordable housing agencies gathered with lenders and HDC asset management and finance staff on September 14 to share information about property refinancing options and products. The half-day event, co-hosted by HUD at the Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Office Building in downtown Portland featured presentations, panel discussions and networking opportunities: 

“Debt 101” presentation by Joni Hartmann, HDC deputy director and HDC Community Fund executive director.

Panel discussion of loan and bond products, facilitated by Emily Schelling, HDC director of asset management and industry support.

“FHA Spotlight” presentation by Tom Azumbrado, HUD San Francisco multifamily hub director.

Panel discussion of industry trends, opportunities, challenges, and best practices, facilitated by Margaret Salazar, HUD Portland field office director, and featuring representatives of Wells Fargo, Beneficial State Bank, U.S. Bank, Walker & Dunlop and ACRE Capital.

Tabling time for housing sponsors to meet directly with lenders.

Housing Development Center is pleased to announce that Jennifer Sharp has joined our Comprehensive Development Services team. As senior construction project manager, Jennifer will provide construction and project management to meet the property development goals of HDC’s clients. Jennifer brings 20 years of experience in construction and project management, including seven years managing campus expansion projects at Portland State University (PSU), to her work at HDC. She has extensive expertise in areas such as public procurement compliance; green building practices; and use of integrated project delivery (IPD) models to manage large-scale collaboration.
