Community celebrates grand reopening of REACH Community Development’s Bronaugh Apartments, historic downtown building serving very-low-income residents. View photos.

Earlier we reported on Housing Development Center’s work assisting REACH Community Development with the renovation of the Bronaugh Apartments. The historic structure in downtown Portland is one of 11 rent-subsidized housing projects that the Portland Housing Bureau targeted in 2008 as being at risk of conversion to market-rate housing. REACH Community Development purchased it in 2013, and HDC worked with REACH, Walsh Construction and Carleton Hart Architecture to plan and manage a major renovation and seismic upgrade.

Kateri Park renovation will correct construction defects, preserve affordable homes for low-income immigrant families.

Caritas Housing Initiatives has closed funding and started renovations on Kateri Park. The 50-unit apartment building in inner Southeast Portland provides affordable homes to low-income households, 80% of which are immigrant refugee families, and includes 20 project-based Section 8 units serving very-low-income and extremely-low-income residents.

Earlier we reported on HDC’s Deep Dive analysis of financial data for 142 Oregon affordable housing properties. The properties, comprising 5,967 multifamily units, belong to 10 organizations around the state that have been working with HDC to develop and implement portfolio sustainability plans through Meyer Memorial Trust’s Sustaining Portfolios Strategy initiative. HDC’s Deep Dive analysis, along with the anonymized source data, are now available for download.

Micro-piles driven. Concrete shear walls erected. Stucco and decorative exterior moldings repaired and repainted. Unit interiors refinished and upgraded with new flooring, paint and energy-efficient appliances. As REACH Community Development’s $7 million renovation and seismic upgrade of the Bronaugh Apartments in downtown Portland rumbled toward a scheduled May completion, HDC Senior Project Manager Lara Spangler and Walsh Construction Superintendent Andy Morris led HDC staff on a tour of the work in progress.
